Allen College Students Provide Health Screenings
Allen College BSN and MSN nurse practitioner (NP) students and faculty joined together on Saturday, April 1 to provide health screenings and education to Waterloo residents during a health fair at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church. Earlier in the semester, the Allen College BSN students completed a community assessment of the area surrounding Mt. Carmel. One issue noted during the assessment was that residents do not access health care and some may not even know where to get the care they need. With the help of Allen College professor Dr. Ruselle Debonis, nurse practitioner students joined the BSN students to provide needed screenings to local residents while BSN students educated them on where services were available nearby.
BSN students assisting with the health fair included Emily Dinsdale, Katie Mason, Bobbi Moeller, Emily Murphy, Morgan Neary, Ally Petersburg, Health Praska, Chris Ries, and Kaitlin Veldhuizen.
MSN NP student Jene Beck assisted Dr. Debonis with physicals, while Faith Kruse, Allen College assistant professor, completed blood draws for labs such as A1C and lipids. Gabi DeWitt (from the Black Hawk Health Department) offered teaching on needed health screenings and where/ how to access free screenings.
Dr. Doreen Mingo, Allen College associate professor, also helped to make this collaborative effort between Allen College and Mt. Carmel a success. It is hoped that similar fairs/screenings will take place in the future.
