Allen Service Honor Students "Strike Out" Hunger

May 17, 2013

WATERLOO, Iowa — During the spring 2013 semester Allen College’s  Service Honors students organized the “Strikin’ Out Hunger Campaign” that sought to involve as many Allen College students as possible to benefit the Northeast Iowa Food Bank.  The project was designed to have Allen College students sign up in teams up to five people and have each team collect a minimum of 25 canned food items. Drop off times were organized so the Service Honors students could keep track of how much food each team brought. First and third graders from the Dr. Walter Cunningham School for Excellence in Waterloo partnered with the Service Honors class for the campaign.  Between the two classrooms the students were able to donate 80 pounds of food

If the minimum of 25 food items was brought the team was invited to a celebration activity at Cadillac Lanes in Waterloo. At the celebration 110 of the participants enjoyed a night of bowling to recognize the campaign’s success.  Team member were also  given shirts and entered into a raffle at the celebration event.

More than 150 faculty, staff, and students signed up to participate in the food drive.  At the conclusion of the campaign Allen College honor students collected a total of 1,500 pounds of food, equivalent to 1,250 meals, greatly exceeding the initial goal of 500 pounds. The Service Honors students from Allen College were able to provide 345 hours of service when coordinating and implementing this project.
