High School Students To Graduate From Allen College Summer Nurse Camp

July 17, 2013

Ceremony will recognize 38 students who completed six-week experience

WATERLOO, Iowa— On Friday, July 19, Allen College – UnityPoint Health will hold a graduation ceremony to recognize 38 high school students who have completed the College’s 2013 Summer Nurse Camp. The ceremony will take place at 10 a.m. in McBride Auditorium, located in Gerard Hall on the Allen College campus.

For the past six weeks the students participated in the College’s Summer Nurse Camp to increase their understanding of careers in nursing. The students interacted daily with Allen College administration, faculty staff and students, and had the opportunity to develop math, science and study skills specifically for the study of nursing and nursing careers.

Students also toured area hospitals, clinics and other locations to observe nurses at work and see hospital departments that nurses interact with. The students also researched and made presentations on nursing careers and colleges that offer nursing degrees.

This is the second summer that Allen College has offered the nurse camp, which is sponsored by a Nursing Workforce Diversity (NWD) grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services – Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). Allen College received the grant to provide students historically underrepresented in the nursing profession and those from disadvantaged backgrounds with skills, knowledge and resources to earn nursing degrees. Last summer, 40 high school students graduated from Allen College’s nurse camp.
