ACE-SAP Sponsors First Free Rural Clinic

April 2, 2011

alt WATERLOO, IOWA---- Allen College’s ACE-SAP Free Clinic provided its clinic to rural residents on Saturday, April 2, in Oelwein, Iowa, at the Zion Lutheran Church.  The free clinic was made possible through the use of a mobile clinic provided by  Des Moines University.  Coordinated by Allen College faculty member Dr. Ruselle DeBonis,   the clinic was staffed by six Allen College nurse practitioner students-- Cami Elliott, Jane Schwartz, Amber Edwards, Mike Johnson, Tabitha Berns, and Lindy Tommasin-- who had volunteered to serve.   The free clinic was also assisted by Palmer Public Health nurses who staffed the immunization clinic.

alt Allen College faculty and students provided care for 36 patients at the Oelwein clinic.  This care included blood tests for cholesterol and glucose levels.  Seventeen patients received medication prescriptions and nine patients were referred to other providers for follow-up care.  The ACE-SAP Free Clinic is making  plans to offer another free clinic in  Oelwein next fall.
