Bachelor of Science in Nursing Curriculum (BSN)

  • Required General Education Courses: 57 credits
  • Nursing Courses: 67 credit hours (20 credit hours granted from validation credit)

Curriculum - General Education


A minimum of 57 semester hours in general education is required for the Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree at Allen College.  A minimum of 45 semester hours in required general education coursework must be completed prior to enrollment at Allen College.  Students attend a regionally accredited institution of their choice to complete the general education courses.

 

Unless indicated by an asterisk or double asterisk, all listed general education courses must be completed prior to enrollment at Allen College.  Students will also need to complete some courses marked by a double asterisk to earn at least 45 semester hours of general education credit prior to enrollment.  

Humanities: (15 credits)

  • Intermediate Written Communication (3 credit hours)
  • Oral Communications (3 credit hours)
  • AC 306  Professional Communication (3 credit hours) (Must be taken prior to semester 3 at Allen College)
  • Humanities Electives** (6 credit hours) Defined by Allen College as Art, Music, Theatre, Dance, English, Foreign Language, Philosophy, History, Cultures, Civilization, Literature, Religion, Economics and Communication Arts.

Social Sciences: (12 credits)

  • Sociology (3 credit hours)
  • Psychology (3 credit hours)
  • Lifespan Growth & Development (3 credit hours)
  • Social Science Electives** (3 credit hours) Defined by Allen College as Geography, History, Political Science, Psychology, Social Work, Sociology, Anthropology and Criminology

 Natural Sciences and Mathematics: (18 credit hours)

  • Anatomy & Physiology I with Lab (3-4 credit hours) (One A & P Course must have a lab)
  • Anatomy & Physiology II with Lab (3-4 credit hours)
  • Introduction to Chemistry with or without Lab (3-4 credit hours)
  • Microbiology with or without Lab (3 credit hours)
  • Nutrition (2-3 credit hours)
  • Introduction to Statistics (3 credit hours)

*LPN-BSN students may choose to complete the NLN Nursing Acceleration Challenge Exam(s) (NACE) for Nursing Care During Childbearing and/or Nursing Care of the Child in lieu of NU375 OB/Family Nursing and/or NU415 Pediatric Nursing.

Validation Credit

The LPN-BSN student will receive validation credit for 20 semester hours after successful completion of NU240 LPN-BSN Bridge and NU285 Health Assessment for the LPN.

 A student must earn a minimum of 124 semester hours to graduate.
