Employment History
Associate Professor and Simulation Coordinator at Allen College. Previously worked as the Manager of Clinical Development at Wheaton Franciscan Hospital (now MercyOne) in Waterloo.
What led you to pursue your education at Allen College?
I knew that I wanted a bachelor’s level degree and Allen was just starting their new BSN program. It was close to home with an excellent reputation.
Any awards, accomplishments or proud moments?
I
completed my Doctor of Nursing Practice at Concordia University in Wisconsin with a project focus on interprofessional education and simulation. I also served as the Alumni Association Board Chair for the past three years.
How did Allen College help prepare you for where you are now?
I believe that Allen provided me with a very well-rounded education in the art of nursing. My professors provided me with excellent instruction and opportunities that sparked a passion for nursing. The focus on holistic nursing and putting the patient first were prominent themes that provided me with the best preparation to be a caring and compassionate nurse.
What was your first job after graduating from Allen?
I worked 3 – 11 p.m. on a medical surgical floor at Ellsworth Municipal Hospital in Iowa Falls, Iowa.
What led you to your exact career path?
I had my first son as a senior while at Allen College, and my first job at Ellsworth Municipal Hospital was close to home and worked well with having a new infant. Through the years, I had two more children and worked part-time while they were growing. I went back to school and got my master’s degree which lead me to my nurse manager role in Clinical Development. After a few faculty members retired at Allen College, I applied and the rest is history!
Hobbies or interests?
I love to garden, read, and attend Iowa State athletic events.
What advice would you give current Allen College students?
To you, the patient in your care may be one of many, but he or she is the number one most-loved person to someone, and you should treat them accordingly.
