Gail Nielsen, Class of 1967

Gail Nielsen, a graduate of the Allen Hospital School of Radiologic Technology's Class of 1967, has dedicated her career to advancing healthcare quality, patient safety and education at the local, national and international levels. Beginning her career at Allen Hospital, she progressed through leadership roles in radiology and quality improvement, spearheading initiatives that improved patient care, enhanced operational efficiency and saved millions of dollars in healthcare costs.

As a nationally recognized leader in healthcare improvement, Gail brought innovative practices to Allen Hospital and Allen College through her work with the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI). Her contributions helped advance patient safety, person-centered care, health literacy and quality improvement across Iowa and beyond. She has served as faculty for international healthcare organizations, including the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland and the International Society for Quality in Health Care (ISQua), influencing healthcare systems around the world.

Gail's commitment to education continues through her support of Allen College, including funding scholarships for students engaged in healthcare improvement projects and contributing to the development of the college's Simulation Lab. Her work on health literacy, including the nationally recognized Teach-back method, has improved communication between healthcare providers and patients and has been adopted by healthcare organizations throughout the United States and internationally.

Through decades of service and innovation, Gail has helped shape the future of healthcare quality and patient safety, earning recognition for both herself and Allen College.
