Allen College Uses Grant Funding to Acquire Virtual Reality Technology for Simulation Lab
April 22, 2026
WATERLOO – Allen College will take nursing education into the future with the introduction of Intulect virtual reality simulation technology this summer. The development is made possible through grant funding and donations from the Aureon Foundation, Waterloo Fiber, Butler‑Bremer Communications and UnityPoint Health – Waterloo.
The virtual reality platform provides immersive, realistic clinical scenarios that strengthen clinical judgment, enhance patient‑care skills and broaden access to diverse learning experiences. Using special headsets and interactive software, students will practice patient care, decision‑making and communication skills in a safe, controlled environment.
“Virtual reality is transforming how future nurses learn, and we’re excited to bring this technology to our students at Allen College,” said Dr. Ashley Ollendieck, Simulation Coordinator. “This investment ensures our graduates are prepared for the rapidly evolving healthcare environment and ready to enter the workforce.”
The grant funding from Aureon Foundation, Waterloo Fiber and Butler‑Bremer Communications reflect a shared commitment to strengthening healthcare education in the Cedar Valley. The gifts support Allen College’s long-standing reputation for strong clinical programs and dedication to preparing highly skilled, practice‑ready nursing professionals.
The virtual reality‑enhanced curriculum launches with undergraduate nursing students in summer 2026. There are plans to expand its use across the curriculum in the fall.
“This is an exciting and important advancement in the simulation‑based learning experiences we offer students,” Ollendieck added. “We look forward to integrating this technology into our curriculum and into our new simulation center, which is expected to be open and operational for the fall 2026 semester.”
Individuals or organizations interested in supporting the continued expansion of simulation education at Allen College are encouraged to connect with the UnityPoint Health – Allen Foundation for more information at (319) 235-3960.
